Fab Region Yucatán in action

Fab Region Yucatán in Mexico, a member of the Fab City Network since 2019, is empowering citizens through digital and social strategies, facilitating innovation and community engagement within its region. With a population of over 2 million inhabitants, Fab Region Yucatán leverages its resources and ecosystems to foster a people-centred approach to creating cutting-edge solutions.

Insights from the Fab City Laugh&Learn Session

During a recent Fab City Laugh&Learn session in June 2023, Linda Contreras Carrillos, Strategy Director of Fab City Hub Yucatán, shared invaluable insights into how data and technology play a crucial role in promoting citizen participation within the region.

During the presentation, three impactful projects were highlighted, showcasing Fab Region Yucatán’s commitment to community-driven solutions. As an urban innovation centre, their vision extends beyond local impact; they seek to influence public policy and promote best practices in cities through the development of programs, tools, and specialised applied research. Fab Region Yucatán has four main areas of focus: climate action and resilient cities, circular economy, citizen science and open data and universal access to knowledge.

Projects implemented in Fab Region Yucatán

  • Sensacitizens — It is a citizen science project that seeks to establish a socially driven multilevel participation by creating experiments and experiences in the public space with the use of people-centred technology and methodologies.
  • Technological tools for urban innovation and citizen participation (HTIU) — This project led to the creation of three tools developed with direct utility to cities that wish to implement them in their urban management, digitization and strengthening citizen participation processes.
  • Crea Cuxtal — CREA Cuxtal is a participatory art program developed and implemented by Fab Region Yucatán A.C. through its digital manufacturing laboratory (FLY), through a co-design methodology with the inhabitants of the Cuxtal ecological reserve.

The projects developed by Fab Region Yucatán aim to achieve multilevel participation by conducting technology-based experiments and experiences in public spaces. Additionally, they aim to make technical information and ecosystem services provided by the city’s trees accessible to the public.
